Foxy Megan Laughing At Gilded Butterflies & Empathizing With Marilyn Monroe

When I first read the quote tattooed on the back of Megan Fox's right shoulder I was very puzzled with the initial reaction of...huh, WTF does "we will all laugh at gilded butterflies" mean? There is definitely a sarcarstic/cynical/bitter-sweet undertone to it, but the meaning still went over my head.

After a little digging I discovered that the quote is from Shakespeare's "King Lear" and put into context it all began to make sense. Thank goodness for Google.

(source: WikiAnswers.com)

The quote is from King Lear who is ruefully pondering his own folly after finding out two of his daughters have betrayed his trust in order to take his fortune. "Gilded butterflies" would generally mean someone overdressed or overly fancy in order to appear more than they are, like a courtier. Lear would be comparing his avaricious daughters to gilded butterflies, appearing to be valuable and beautiful on the outside, but are mere whimsical and insubstantial inside. A further overtone is in one meaning of "gilded", which is "covered in blood", an obvious metaphor for violence or death. Laughing at the above would be a form of derision.

A butterfly is already something of great beauty and functionality. Gilding it - that is, gold-plating it - is an example of human folly, an example of human arrogance in thinking that gilding a butterfly makes it better when in fact, it would destroy both its great natural beauty and its ability to fly. Like applying layers of makeup to an already beautiful woman, obscuring her natural beauty, Lear recognizes the idiocy of this, and thus can refer to laughing at this sort of thing. And of course, the "gilded butterflies" themselves can refer either to his own daughters or others in the court, who, in their natural state may well be beautiful human beings, but now, being "gilded" only look good to those who don't know better, to those who like the artificial beauty of the *appearance* of gold. And gilding also means the butterflies can no longer fly. They can no longer really function. They can only sit there, doing nothing. And, on yet another level of this metaphor, let's not forget that gilding is nothing but a thin gold-leafing, thus making it literally worth almost nothing. A gilded butterfly only looks like solid gold. It is not. And those who know better, like King Lear finally, can laugh at this kind of stupidity.

chinese character meaning strength
Although it can't be seen in the picture above, there is a Chinese character for "strength" tattooed on her neck. Does that mean she'll be needing the strength to withstand all the mockery?

Megan Fox is also a huge fan of Marilyn Monroe and has a tattoo of Monroe's face tattooed on her inner right forearm. When asked "Why Marilyn and is it permanent?" in a 2007 interview, Megan Fox replied: "Yeah, it’s definitely permanent. What a douche bag I’d be if I had like a temporary tattoo. It’s a real tattoo and I just had an incredible amount empathy for her my whole life. I cry when I see her on camera, when I hear her voice. I know a lot about her but I empathized with her before I knew any of those things so that’s why I was driven to actually ink it on my arm. It was between her and Kurt Cobain and I went with her."

David Beckham - Tattoos, Soccer, Victoria & Armani Underwear

David Beckham is famous for quite a few things, his tattoos and soccer skills take the limelight as well as his marriage to Posh Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham. And just to add to his fame and riches is his 20 million (that's pounds) contract to pose in underwear for Armani. He sure has the looks and the body to pull it off! (pardon the pun)

The Winged Cross tattoo that is on the back of David Beckham's neck created quite a stir amongst his fans and critics after he first got it done. Opinion polls reported that this tattoo along with his shaved head made him look like a "hooligan". He got this tattoo done while in the middle of the 2004 World Cup and had his UK tattooist, Louis Malloy, flown in to do it.

Just below the base of his neck, underneath the winged cross, is the name of his second son, "ROMEO".

The Guardian Angel figure with outstretched arms sits between his shoulder blades and below this winged figure are the letters "CRUZ", the name of his third son.

The name of his first son, "BROOKLYN" is tattooed across his lower back.

The Chinese Calligraphy tattoo down the left side of his torso was done in Hong Kong. The Chinese Characters read: "Death and life have determined appointments, Riches and honors depends upon heaven."

The tattoos on David Beckham's left arm are related to his personal life and mainly dedicated to his wife Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice. Victoria's name in Hindi script is tattooed on the inside of his left forearm. Below that tattoo is a phrase in Latin, "Ut Amem Et Foveam", which translates to "So that I love and cherish."

In January 2008, Beckham added to his left arm by getting a tattoo of his wife Victoria in a reproduction of a Brigitte Bardot-like pose that was taken for Pop Magazine back in 2004. It covers the entire outside of his left forearm. A variety of sources report this to be David's favorite picture of her. The tattoo has some stars around it and the phrases "Forever by your side" and "'Til death do us part."

Just recently, on July 15, 2009, David Beckham appeared on the TODAY Show in the US, and showed off some new ink on his left arm, just above the elbow. He has added a ring of ten roses going around his lower bicep, one for each year that he and wife Victoria have been married. They have just celebrated their 10th anniversary! Awww, sexy, handsome, romantic, committed, successful and rich!

Famous Tattoo Lover - Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is by far the most famous female celebrity who is well known for her love of tattoos. There is nothing discreet about her tattoos as judging by pictures of her public appearances, she likes to show them off whenever she can.

The Bengal tiger tattoo which can be seen in the above picture on Jolie’s lower back was done as a celebratory tattoo to commemorate her Cambodian citizenship.

When Angelina Jolie is shooting a film, her tattoos are usually covered with make-up. She also has had some of her tattoos removed. One of them, what appears to be the remnants of a dragon design, can be seen on her left upper arm.

The cross tattoo is reported to be especially symbolic. Jolie had it done it before marrying her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller. The Latin phrase, “Quod me nutrit me destruit” is located near Jolie’s cross tattoo. It means “What nourishes me, destroys me”.

The Gothic lettering tattoo - "know your rights" - that this is found between her shoulder blades is the title of a song of her favorite band.

On her left shoulder blade is a Buddhist Pali incantation written in Khmer, the official language of Cambodia . This was done by tattoo artist Noo Kanhphaiin in a hotel in Pathum Thani, north of Bangkok. This tattoo is meant as protection for her and her adoptive Cambodian son Maddox from bad luck.

The apparent translation of the incantation is:
"May your enemies run away from you. If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always. Your beauty will be that of Apsara. Whenever you may go, many will attend, serve and protect you, surrounding you on all sides. "

Charlize Theron's Flower and Koi Tattoos

Charlize Theron has two small tattoos - one of a flower on the top of her right foot and another of a koi on the back of her right ankle.

Generally speaking, the Koi (also known as carp) is a Japanese symbol that means perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. Along strength and determination, there is courage to go after your dreams and the ability to reach your goals. This is certainly true for Charlize Theron.

Other interpretations of the Koi include: Family, Love and Good Fortune.

From what I can gather the flower tattoo has no significant meaning. It is a petite and pretty tattoo that is subtle and sexy and which looks fabulous on Charlize Theron's foot.
